We are excited to once again bring you "A Fan's Guide" to the FHSAA Regional Tournaments that are taking place this coming weekend across Florida.  We are pleased to provide the casual fan an insider's look into each bracket and what may (or may not) happen over the course of the weekend.  We make no predictions about who will win or qualify for next week's state tournament.  For each weight class we provide a few bulletpoints to watch and then a copy of the bracket (which you can see for yourself on trackwrestling.com).  Each weight class features:

  • Favorite: Our favorite to win the weight class based on this past season and past performance.
  • Contenders: A list of wrestlers that should challenge the favorite for the top step on the podium.
  • Best 1st round match: The match we believe will be the closest during the 1st round of action.
  • Darkhorse: A wrestler that did not finish 1st or 2nd in his/her area, but has all the tools to knock off everyone and take the top step.
  • Predicted Finals Match: Obviously who we believe will be in the finals.

Team Notes: School (# = # of qualifiers, # = # of District Champs)

Individual Notes:  SQ = 2015 State Qualifier; 1st = 2015 State Champ; 2nd = 2015 State Runner-up, etc.

District 5

  • Crystal River (14, 5)
  • Dunnellon (4, 2)
  • Eastside (6, 0)
  • Interlachen (4, 1)
  • North Marion (4, 1)
  • Palatka (11, 0)
  • St John Lutheran (1, 0)
  • Trinity Catholic (3, 1)

District 6

  • Anclote (6, 1)
  • Central (0, 0)
  • Gulf (8, 2)
  • Hernando (13, 0)
  • Hudson (7, 1)
  • Nature Coast (6, 3)
  • Ridgewood (4, 0)
  • Weeki Wachee (12, 7)

District 7

  • Atlantic (9, 0)
  • Bishop Moore (12, 2)
  • Central Fl Christian (0, 0)
  • Lake Highland Prep (13, 11)
  • Villages (8, 1)

District 8

  • Astronaut (12, 7)
  • Cocoa (3, 0)
  • Cocoa Beach (4, 0)
  • Rockledge (12, 3)
  • Satellite (9, 3)
  • Space Coast (13, 1)
  • Titusville (2, 0)

  • Favorite: Lake Highland Prep
  • Contenders:
    • Astronaut
    • Weeki Wachee
    • Bishop Moore
    • Crystal River
  • Darkhorse: Satellite
  • Summary: The 1A Region 2 team race will be LHP and then everyone else.  Crystal River, Weeki Wachee, Bishop Moore, Astronaut, and others enter with strong line-ups, but they will be battling for the Runner-up trophy behind the Highlanders of Lake Highland Prep.  LHP might be the best team in Florida and the beat across the Southeast ... 1A Region 2 will be fun to watch, but don't expect a battle for the top step.  Now the battle for #2 will be very interesting and will likely come down to some crucial matches between the teams mentioned above.  Bishop Moore has the fewest number of District Champions entering the tournament, but that is only because they share a district with LHP.  How well Bishop Moore's #2's and #3's perform will tell you whether they will hold off Astronaut, Weeki Wachee, and the others.  Astronaut is the likely runner-up, but will need Louis Cortez, Conner Kirk, Ethan Ahrens and the other leaders to step up and score points.  Keep an eye on Nature Coast, Rockledge, and Satellite.  They will push for a top 5 finish.

106 lbs.

  • Favorite: Ryan Chauvin (LHP)
  • Contenders:
    • Dalton David (Crystal River)
    • Carson Kirk (Astronaut)
    • Ryan Rowland (Bishop Moore)
    • Devin Horton (Weeki Wachee)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Freda vs. Rochon
  • Darkhorse: Kevin Rochon (Villages)
  • Finals: David vs. Chauvin
  • Summary: No returning State Qualifiers, but Chauvin has been tough all season.  Dalton David, Carson Kirk, Ryan Rowland, and others will battle it out on the top side.  The quarterfinals between David and Freda or Rochon and Dill or Rowland vs. Kirk should be fun to watch.  Chauvin should handle the bottom side with relative ease.  Horton needs to win and advance and get to the semi's (and then probably wait for one of the names listed above to come to him in the consolation semi's with a ticket to the state tournament on the line).

113 lbs.

  • Favorite: Noah Castillo (LHP)
  • Contenders:
    • Austin Bonasota (Villages)
    • Louis Cortez (Astronaut)
    • Chase Bunts (Crystal River)
    • Evan Simonson (Gulf)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Herndon vs. Gener
  • Darkhorse: Nick Walker (Bishop Moore)
  • Finals: Castillo vs. Bonasota
  • Summary: Castillo and Bunts are pretty much alone on the top side ... Castillo is easily the best wrestler in the bracket.  The bottom side should be fun to watch.  Simonson vs. Bonasota with the winner getting Cortez (likely) seems the most probable.  Look for Bunts vs. Simonson (or Bonasota) for a trip to the state tournament.  Don't sleep on Nick Walker of Bishop Moore - he could make things interesting.

120 lbs.

  • Favorite: Mason Wohltman (LHP) - 1st @ 106
  • Contenders:
    • Devin Kohn (Bishop Moore) - SQ @ 106 in 3A
    • Austin Agarzam (Gulf)
    • Brandon Smith (Weeki Wachee) - 4th @ 106
    • Austin Lashure (Rockledge)
    • Nick Lebeau (Astronaut) - SQ @ 120
    • Shade Ward (Palatka)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Sharp vs. Lebeau
  • Darkhorse: Colter Sharp (Villages)
  • Finals: Kohn vs. Wohltman
  • Summary: Great weight class with the defending 106 lb. State Champion, a State Placer, and 2 returning State Qualifiers.  Getting to the state tournament in this bracket will be difficult.  The 2nd and 3rd quarters of this bracket are the toughest ... Either Hulse or Ward will likely need to beat Kohn, Lebeau, or Agarzarm to punch their ticket the state tournament.  Wohltman should handle the bottom side ... Brandon Smith vs. Austin Lashure should be a good quarterfinal bout.

126 lbs.

  • Favorite: Joe Silva (LHP) - 1st @ 126
  • Contenders:
    • Conner Kirk (Astronaut) - 5th @ 113
    • Bryce Follett (Dunnellon)
    • Jake Wheeler (Bishop Moore)
    • Nick Marsh (Weeki Wachee)
    • Dean Lowe (Palatka)
  • Best 1st Round Match:
  • Darkhorse: Legend Newsome (Space Coast)
  • Finals: Silva vs. Kirk
  • Summary: Silva is one of the best 126's in the country ... so Conner Kirk, Bryce Follett and others are wrestling for 2nd (not that improbable things don't happen ... it simply isn't very likely).  Silva should handle the top side, Kirk the bottom side.  Bout #'s 108 and 111 will be important and will come into play in who advances to the state tournament.

132 lbs.

  • Favorite: Kai Bele (LHP)
  • Contenders:
    • Hunter Gibson (Weeki Wachee)
    • Nick Tomesko (Bishop Moore)
    • Chance Luckey (Crystal River)
    • Jason Amato (Space Coast)
    • Dakota Ellerbee (Hernando)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Tomesko vs. Lopez
  • Darkhorse: Nael Lopez (Rockledge)
  • Finals: Gibson vs. Bele
  • Summary: No returning State Qualifiers, but LHP's 8th grader Kai Bele wrestles like he's been there and done that.  It would be surprising to see anyone in this bracket challenge him.  Other than Bele, the weight class is wide open.  Luckey, Tomesko, Lopez, Marsh, and Gibson all have a shot on the top side.

138 lbs.

  • Favorite: Aaron Mason (Bishop Moore)
  • Contenders:
    • Max Cosmides (LHP)
    • Keegan Davis (Nature Coast)
    • Tyler Hansen (Satellite)
    • Josh Thorch (Crystal River)
    • Reggie Bradley (Space Coast)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Sheppard vs. Stopyra
  • Darkhorse: TJ Tamburello (Cocoa Beach)
  • Finals: Cosmides vs. Mason
  • Summary: Another open weight class ... Mason beat Cosmides 1-0 to take the District 7 title and put himself in a better position to be in the finals.  Cosmides vs. Hanson in bout 123 should be interesting (assuming Cosmides advances past Bearden).  Anyone could come out of the top quarter of the bracket.  Keep an eye on Tyler Hansen and Keegan Davis ... both have the ability to beat everyone in the bracket.

145 lbs.

  • Favorite: Jake Brindley (LHP) - 2nd @ 126
  • Contenders:
    • Ethan Ahrens (Astronaut) - SQ @ 145
    • Brandon Enoch (Weeki Wachee) - SQ @ 132
    • Bradley Kata (Bishop Moore)
    • CJ Lawson (Crystal River)
    • Codey Maniates (Hernando)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Bracket vs. Lamba
  • Darkhorse: Joe Scherer (Satellite)
  • Finals: Ahrens vs. Brindley
  • Summary: Good weight class that should be dominated by Jake Brindley.  With wins over Artalona, Lewis, and some of the other top 145's in the state, Brindley looks to be on another level in 2016.  Ahrens is away from Brindley and should take care of the top side ... Enoch meanwhile should get Brindley in the semi's.  Keep an eye on Codey Maniates and Bradley Kata on the top side.

152 lbs.

  • Favorite: Erich Byelick (LHP) - 2nd @ 145
  • Contenders:
    • Ryan Violette (Bishop Moore) - SQ @ 152
    • Brock Grant (Satellite)
    • Anthony Riggins (Trinity Catholic)
    • Jordan Gibson (Nature Coast)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Gomez vs. Taylor
  • Darkhorse: Ryan Hatcher (Villages)
  • Finals: Violette vs. Byelick
  • Summary: Byelick beat Violette a week ago and the two should meet again Saturday evening.  Riggins is the District Champ that draws the short straw with Violette in his quarter ... he will need to battle through the backside of the bracket to punch his ticket to Kissimmee.  Keep an eye on a possible match between Brock Grant and Riggins, Hatcher or Gibson.

160 lbs.

  • Favorite: Bryce Rogers (LHP) - 1st @ 145
  • Contenders:
    • Nathaniel DeJesus (Weeki Wachee)
    • Justin Perkins (Atlantic)
    • Nathaniel Newberry (Astronaut)
    • Cameron Fischer (Crystal River)
    • Zack Adams (Anclote)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Smith vs. Adams
  • Darkhorse: Joey Smith (Cocoa Beach)
  • Finals: Rogers vs. DeJesus
  • Summary: Returning State Champion Bryce Rogers is the best in the bracket ... and everyone else is significantly behind him.  Fischer, Adams, Munford, and Smith will look to punch their tickets through the backside of the bracket.  DeJesus vs. Perkins with the winner likely getting Newberry is your probable bottom side.  Keep an eye on Brian Roche of Bishop Moore.

170 lbs.

  • Favorite: Elijah Cleary (LHP) - 1st @ 160
  • Contenders:
    • Donte Young (Weeki Wachee)
    • Chase Hall (Rockledge)
    • Willie James (North Marion)
    • Jonathan Pankow (Space Coast)
    • Tyler Clagett (Atlantic)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Storm vs. Miller
  • Darkhorse: Tyler Storm (Astronaut)
  • Finals: Hall vs. Cleary
  • Summary: Returning 160 lb. State Champion Elijah Cleary is the prohibitive favorite at 170.  James, Williams, Clagett, and Hall should battle it out on the top side.  One of them will likely need to beat either Pankow, Young or Storm to qualify.

182 lbs.

  • Favorite: Kevin Ford (LHP) - SQ @ 170
  • Contenders:
    • Chris Ralston (Satellite) - 3rd @ 195
    • Edward Bennis (Crystal River) - SQ @ 182
    • Zac Viers (Space Coast)
    • Logan Hasting (Interlachen)
    • Rayshard Small (Anclote)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Corak vs. Hastings
  • Darkhorse: Michael Corak (Rockledge)
  • Finals: Ralston vs. Ford
  • Summary: Great weight class with Ford, Ralston and Bennis.  Ford and Ralston should contend for the top step next weekend as well.  Thomas vs. Ralston with the winner likely getting Bennis should be some great matches on the top side.  Ford vs. Viers in the bottom quarter and Small vs. Hastings (or Corak) in the 3rd quarter should be fun to watch as well.  Viers vs. Bennis in bout 209 with a trip to Kissimmee on the line could be a fun one to watch.

195 lbs.

  • Favorite:  Lance Hasting (Interlachen)
  • Contenders:
    • Drake Carson (Hudson)
    • Sam Voor (Astronaut)
    • Abel Terkovich (Hernando)
    • Trey Petro (Villages)
    • Jaret Flynn (Crystal River)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Biondo vs. Schaefer
  • Darkhorse: Danny Lee (Satellite)
  • Finals: Hasting vs. Carson
  • Summary: Wide open weight class ... Many of the top contenders in the state appear to have avoided 195 (and 2X State Champion Ryan Thomas).  What hat means in Region 2 is that any of the names listed above have a shot at the top step this weekend.

220 lbs.

  • Favorite: Anthony Contegiacomo (Nature Coast) - 2nd @ 220
  • Contenders:
    • Ben Goldin (LHP) - 5th @ 195
    • Matt Whitehouse (Atlantic)
    • Spencer Beard (Rockledge)
    • Clayton Owens (Dunnellon)
    • Romeo Tzobanakis (Weeki Wachee)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Blizard vs. Listebarger
  • Darkhorse: Michael Listebarger (Hernando)
  • Finals: Goldin vs. Contegiacomo
  • Summary: Great weight class with some very good matches along the way.  It should be Goldin vs. Contegiacomo, but Contegiacomo vs. Whitehouse might be one of the best quarterfinals in the tournament.  Keep an eye on Michael Listebarger in the top quarter.

285 lbs.

  • Favorite: Dean Brooks (Weeki Wachee) - 6th @ 285
  • Contenders:
    • Jason Graham (Crystal River)
    • Mario Hernandez (Bishop Moore)
    • Javohn Maravolo (Astronaut)
    • Adrian Carson (Hudson)
    • Joe Schwartz (Satellite)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Ruff vs. Schwartz
  • Darkhorse: Robert Graves (Hernando)
  • Finals: Brooks vs. Hernandez
  • Summary: Returning State Placer Dean Brooks is the man to beat at 285.  Graham appears to be his toughest competition and the two could meet in the top semifinal ... assuming Graham can get by EJ Krawjewski of Rockledge.  Javohn Maravolo vs. Adrian Carson in the bottom quarterfinal looks like a good one ... and the winner could certainly beat Hernandez or Graves to advance to the finals.
