We are excited to once again bring you "A Fan's Guide" to the FHSAA Regional Tournaments that are taking place this coming weekend across Florida.  We are pleased to provide the casual fan an insider's look into each bracket and what may (or may not) happen over the course of the weekend.  We make no predictions about who will win or qualify for next week's state tournament.  For each weight class we provide a few bulletpoints to watch and then a copy of the bracket (which you can see for yourself on trackwrestling.com).  Each weight class features:

  • Favorite: Our favorite to win the weight class based on this past season and past performance.
  • Contenders: A list of wrestlers that should challenge the favorite for the top step on the podium.
  • Best 1st round match: The match we believe will be the closest during the 1st round of action.
  • Darkhorse: A wrestler that did not finish 1st or 2nd in his/her area, but has all the tools to knock off everyone and take the top step.
  • Predicted Finals Match: Obviously who we believe will be in the finals.

Team Notes: School (# = # of qualifiers, # = # of District Champs)

Individual Notes:  SQ = 2015 State Qualifier; 1st = 2015 State Champ; 2nd = 2015 State Runner-up, etc.

District 9

  • Avon Park (11, 7)

Team

  • Favorite:  Tampa Prep
  • Contenders:
    • Avon Park
    • Indian Rocks Christian
    • Lely
    • Berkeley Prep
    • Dunbar
  • Darkhorse:  Sarasota Military
  • Summary:  Should be an exciting team race.  Tampa Prep and Indian Rocks Christian have the individual hammers, but they lack the depth.  Can either of them hold off Avon Park, Berkeley Prep, Lely, Dunbar, and the rest of the field?  It would be a surprise if Tampa Prep and Indian Rocks Christian didn't have the most Region Champions, but that doesn't always equate to a Region Team Title.  If the teams that have 3 or 4 more qualifiers that the co-favorites can get production from their #2's and #3's then they have a shot at claiming the title for themselves.  With 7 champions each, Avon Park and Berkeley Prep appear to have the best shot.

106 lbs.

  • Favorite: Lucas Willis (Imagine School) - SQ @ 106
  • Contenders:
    • Matthew Malavsky (Evangelical Christian) - SQ @ 106
    • Danya Jones (Gibbs)
    • Travon Spry (Avon Park)
    • Ben Buehler (Tampa Prep)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Marquez vs. Stillwell
  • Darkhorse: Jacob Manning (St Stephens)
  • Finals: Willis vs. Malavsky
  • Summary:  Malavsky and Willis have met numerous times this season, with Willis taking each match.  Malavsky has been creeping a little closer and did beat Willis once a year ago so he has a puncher's chance.  Spry has had a nice season, with his personal kryptonite Ryan Fountain up in 2A he should make it through the consi bracket.  Last spot could come down to a battle between Ben Buehler and Jacob Manning.

113 lbs.

  • Favorite: Aaron Mills (Tampa Prep)
  • Contenders:
    • Albert Werdon (Lemon Bay)
    • Alan Marano (Bradenton Christian)
    • Timothy Ferreira (Avon Park)
    • Randy Torres (Southeast)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Brynjofsson vs. Simpson
  • Darkhorse: David Fitch (Gibbs)
  • Finals: Marano vs. Mills
  • Summary:  Not sure why, but Mills missed a good portion of the early season but came back in the last month to get ready for a state run.  He enters as the favorite, but not without a fight.  Lemon Bay's Werden was a favorite at 106 but had trouble making the weight and moved up.  Will be an interesting contrast with the shorter Mills going against the lanky Werden.  Dunbar's Simpson is another wrestler that moved up from 106 but will be in the hunt.  Don't sleep on Lely's St. Surin and see the last spot coming down between him and Werden.

120 lbs.

  • Favorite: Dre'Boris Neely (Avon Park) - 4th @ 120
  • Contenders:
    • Eric Garcia (Lely) - SQ @ 120
    • Jason Meyer (Evangelical Christian) - SQ @ 113
    • Simon Ullrich (Sarasota Military)
    • Alex Prunoske (Clearwater Central Catholic)
    • Wismy Cadet (Spoto)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Fuson vs. Ullrich
  • Darkhorse: Gabriel Ramirez (Immokalee)
  • Finals: Neely vs. Garcia
  • Summary: This is a loaded class and should provide some of the best matches of the tournament.  Easily 7 to 8 wrestlers have a legitimate shot to advance.  District 12 is particularly well represented.  Lely's Garcia has some impressive wins, and a couple confusing losses but most of them were at a different weight.  Neely is a hammer and is the clear cut favorite in a talented class.  Wins over 2A studs Smallwood and DeAugustino show what kind of wrestler he is.

126 lbs.

  • Favorite: Trevor McDaniel (Dunbar)
  • Contenders:
    • Noah Farrelly (Admiral Farragut)
    • Jeffrey Phillips (Booker) - SQ @ 126
    • Jose Pontinella Jr (Avon Park)
    • Connor Brown (Berkeley Prep)
    • Kyle Garoutte (Imagine School)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Martinez vs. Brown
  • Darkhorse: Nicholas Turrubiartez (Immokalee)
  • Finals: Pointella vs. McDaniel
  • Summary:  McDaniel struggled a bit to start the season but shook that off around the Lee County Athletic Conference tournament.  He is peaking at the right time to take this class.  If the bracket plays as expected, I look for an exceptional match in the top side semis with Pontinella and Farrelly squaring off.  Expect the loser of that match to come back on the other side.  Bracket buster Turrubiartez will make it to the blood round, but will he make it through?

132 lbs.

  • Favorite: Kenny Egan (Avon Park)
  • Contenders:
    • Jack Pohler (Indian Rocks Christian) - SQ @ 126
    • Ashton Habiel (Tampa Prep) - 3rd @ 113
    • Matthew Vary (Clewiston)
    • Andonet Thermidor (Immokalee) - SQ @ 132
  • Best 1st Round Match: Manning vs. Thermidor
  • Darkhorse: Jarred Dilley (Lemon Bay)
  • Finals: Egan vs. Pohler
  • Summary:  Habeil very well could be the future but could be a year away.  A close decision loss to Dylan Cameron is the only blip on Egan's resume, which also features wins against highly thought of Clayton Leach of Lake Gibson and Grant Smith of Auburndale.  Thermidor qnd Habeil should be a great match, and I see Thermidor and Vary in a blood round matchup.  Dilley will fall just short of pulling an upset.

138 lbs.

  • Favorite: Gregory Krempski (Oasis)
  • Contenders:
    • Jack Lescarbeau (Admiral Farragut)
    • Christian Dangle (Mulberry)
    • Alexander Romanowski (Berkeley Prep)
    • David Delly (Lely)
    • Nick Carbone (Northside Christian)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Dangle vs. Hutchins
  • Darkhorse: Daylon Hutchins (Dunbar)
  • Finals: Krempski vs. Lescarbeau
  • Summary:  There is a hammer at this weight, Sarasota Military's Frankie Hammer, but he is not quite ready to bang heads with the best in this weight.  Krempski is experienced but has not been to the big show.  Lescarbeau and Romanowski should be a tight semifinal.  Delly is just a freshman but his tool belt is fully loaded.  Not quite a hammer but on his way to being one.  Expect him to prevent a top seed from advancing to state.

145 lbs.

  • Favorite: Anthony Artalona (Tampa Prep) - 1st @ 138
  • Contenders:
    • Kayhan Peksen (Lely)
    • Mitchell Kerr (Indian Rocks Christian)
    • Jarred Surrency (McKeel)
    • Isaac Vargas (Immokalee)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Dagg vs. Grice
  • Darkhorse: Zack Dagg (Lemon Bay)
  • Finals: Peksen vs. Artalona
  • Summary:  Artalona is quite simply the best wrestler in this tournament and as big a hammer as there is in the state series.  Peksen is next best although Kerr might have something to say about that if the bracket was a little different.  Vargas is a little under the radar but has beat Dagg already and may end up doing so again in the consi bracket.  Expect Grice to make it to the blood round but he might end up on the wrong side of that matchup.

152 lbs.

  • Favorite: Michael Gingras (Indian Rocks Christian) - 3rd @ 145
  • Contenders:
    • Josh Washington (Lemon Bay)
    • Trayvon Taylor (Admiral Farragut)
    • Tanner Oxer (Lake Placid)
    • Caleb Van Helden (South Florida Christian)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Van Helden vs. Locke
  • Darkhorse: Lovens Sylfroid (Dunbar)
  • Finals: Taylor vs. Gingras
  • Summary:  Bottom half of the bracket looks to be Gingras' for the taking as he looks to remain undefeated.  Top side is where the excitement will be.  I think Oxer, Taylor and Sylfroid could be a real battle.  I have Sylfroid losing out but having a chance coming back through the consis.  Sylfroid just might have the best name in the entire tournament.  Washington from Lemon Bay is the only real challenge for Gingras and has a good route to consi bracket.

160 lbs.

  • Favorite: Leonardo Tarantino (Tampa Prep) - 2nd @ 152
  • Contenders:
    • Kamen Wilmington (Northside Christian) - SQ @ 152
    • Lavaris Preston (Dunbar) - 6th @ 160
    • Christopher Garcia (Avon Park)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Berenson vs. Lansberg
  • Darkhorse: Marlon Moreta (Lely)
  • Finals: Wilmington vs. Tarantino
  • Summary:  To me, one of the most anticipated weights in 1A-3.  I see the 4 district champs having an easy go with their first two matches, then sparks in the semis.  Garcia has had a great year but faces true hammer Wilmington, whose only losses this year were to Bryce Rogers of LHP and Adam Pyle, both highly ranked wrestlers.  Tarantino caught my eye last year, this year also has a loss against Rogers and one against Camden County.  Did I mention he is a returning state runnerup?  He will have his hands full with the athletic Preston, 6th place a year ago.  This is a step up in competition for Preston, looking to see how he handles it.  I could easily see 3 to 4 of these guys on the podium next week.

170 lbs.

  • Favorite: Jake Walker (Sarasota Military) - SQ @ 152
  • Contenders:
    • Stephen Kelle (Southeast) - SQ @ 170
    • Jeremy Hernandez (Dunbar)
    • Cade Smith (Victory Christian)
    • Colton Karpman (Berkeley Prep)
    • Kevin Cherry (Lely)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Cherry vs. Harrington
  • Darkhorse: Tra'Vaughn Harrington (Gibbs)
  • Finals: Kelle vs. Walker
  • Summary:  Looking like a rematch of the District 11 Final, with Jake Walker of SMA matching up with Stephen Kelle of Southeast.  Cade Smith of Victory Christian is the likely semi matchup for Kelle, although darkhorse Harrington has a puncher's chance in the quarters.  Berkeley Prep's Karpman is looking like a consolation bracket winner, could face Cherry of Lely.

182 lbs.

  • Favorite: Conner Allshouse (Indian Rocks Christian) - 2nd @ 160
  • Contenders:
    • Devon Varcoe (Lely)
    • Dalton Burton (Sarasota Military)
    • Luke Schwartz (McKeel)
    • Jacob Safee (Berkeley Prep)
    • Edilberto Vazquez (Clewiston)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Douglas vs. Safee
  • Darkhorse: Joshua Page (Lakewood)
  • Finals: Burton vs. Allshouse
  • Summary:  Where have I heard this before, but this could be another District rematch.  Allshouse is a flat out stud and the odds on favorite but had to work hard for the decision against Burton a week ago.  Burton will have his hands full with the lanky Varcoe from Leyl as well as Luke Schwartz from McKeel, who had an easy run through District 9.

195 lbs.

  • Favorite: Selbourne Steward (Indian Rocks Christian)
  • Contenders:
    • Kristopher Harmon (McKeel)
    • Brandon Isnardi (Lely)
    • Judah Bertolotti (Dunbar) - SQ @ 195
    • Darrien Grant (Southeast) - SQ @ 195
    • Alonzo Sampson (Zephryhills Christian)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Smith vs. Jordan
  • Darkhorse: Cuquin Guido (Lemon Bay)
  • Finals: Steward vs. Isnardi
  • Summary:  This is most likely the weakest overall weight class in the Region, with multiple first round byes.  Steward is another in the line of very talented wrestlers from Indian Rocks Christian who looks like the Regional Champion.  The Senior Isnardi from Lely might finally be putting it all together and while a potential finalist I don't see him challenging Steward.  Dunbar's Bertolotti and Harmon from McKeel could fill out the podium.  Guido unfortunately faces Steward early on but could come back through.

220 lbs.

  • Favorite:  Jared Escoria (Clewiston) - 3rd @ 220
  • Contenders:
    • Judas McKenzie (Dunbar)
    • Javier Arango (Avon Park)
    • Christopher Keith (Gibbs)
    • Sam Chadwick (Berkeley Prep)
    • Marquivias Brooks (Bayshore)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Duncan vs. Coyne
  • Darkhorse: Taquon Brown (Victory Christian)
  • Finals: McKenzie vs. Escoria
  • Summary:  Look for McKenzie to break through on the top side.  Escorcia was 3rd at this weight a year ago and is looking to finish on top of the podium in Kissimmee.  Chadwick might be a finals pick if not for the bracket but should advance.  I think Brooks and Keith will fight it out in the blood round for the last spot.

285 lbs.

  • Favorite: Laurence Grundy (Berkeley Prep) - SQ @ 182
  • Contenders:
    • Mike Morales (Lemon Bay)
    • Kris Bozeman (Tenoroc)
    • Cesar Gallegos (Labelle)
    • Julio Mosquera (Tarpon Springs)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Taylor vs. Burke
  • Darkhorse: Nazario Quiles (Mulberry)
  • Finals: Grundy vs. Morales
  • Summary:  Grundy looks to be the class of this bracket, only losses are to highly ranked wrestlers.  Morales is a good looking 10th grader, has a nice head and arm for a heavy, actually caught 2A stud Delago in one at Lely Duals but got rolled through. Mosquera and Bozeman have a great chance at the remaining two spots, with Gallegos a long shot.
