We are excited to once again bring you "A Fan's Guide" to the FHSAA Regional Tournaments that are taking place this coming weekend across Florida.  We are pleased to provide the casual fan an insider's look into each bracket and what may (or may not) happen over the course of the weekend.  We make no predictions about who will win or qualify for next week's state tournament.  For each weight class we provide a few bulletpoints to watch and then a copy of the bracket (which you can see for yourself on trackwrestling.com).  Each weight class features:

  • Favorite: Our favorite to win the weight class based on this past season and past performance.
  • Contenders: A list of wrestlers that should challenge the favorite for the top step on the podium.
  • Best 1st round match: The match we believe will be the closest during the 1st round of action.
  • Darkhorse: A wrestler that did not finish 1st or 2nd in his/her area, but has all the tools to knock off everyone and take the top step.
  • Predicted Finals Match: Obviously who we believe will be in the finals.

Team Notes: School (# = # of qualifiers, # = # of District Champs)

Individual Notes:  SQ = 2015 State Qualifier; 1st = 2015 State Champ; 2nd = 2015 State Runner-up, etc.

Team

  • Favorite: Cardinal Gibbons
  • Contenders:
    • Somerset Academy
    • Key West
    • American Heritage (DB)
    • Keys Gate
    • American Heritage (Plantation)
  • Darkhorse: Miami Jackson
  • Summary: Should be a 3-way battle between Cardinal Gibbons, Key West, and Somerset Academy.  Each qualified 11 or more and each had 7 or more district champions.  Head-to-head battles will tell the story.  Keep an eye on American Heritage Delray Beach, American Heritage Plantation, and Keys Gate.  They will impact the team race.  Miami Jackson qualifies 12, with 3 champions and could break into the top 3 with a solid weekend.  There are several weight class "up for grabs" and they will likely be very important in the team race ... whoever can get those points will likely end up on top.

106 lbs.

  • Favorite: Darrien Estevez (Somerset Academy)
  • Contenders:
    • Aaron Palacios (Key West)
    • Jed Huerkamp (Cardinal Gibbons)
    • Rodrigo Mata (AHDB)
    • Jacob Delgado (Keys Gate)
    • Terrel Taylor (Coral Springs Charter)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Delgado vs. Weinberg
  • Darkhorse: Jesse Weinberg (Somerset Canyons)
  • Finals: Estevez vs. Palacois
  • Summary: Wide open weight class that features as many as 6 wrestlers with a chance at the top step.  Mata vs. Taylor looks like a really good quarterfinal bout, as does the winner of Delgado vs. Weinberg vs. Estevez.

113 lbs.

  • Favorite: Christopher Riley (Somerset Academy)
  • Contenders:
    • Brandon Moreau (Cardinal Gibbons)
    • Eric Barnes (Jupiter Christian)
    • Devon Smith (Miami Jackson)
    • Logan Schmund (Coral Shores)
    • Michael Sarron (Calvary Christian)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Udertiz vs. Scirghio
  • Darkhorse: Joseph Scirghio (Chaminade Madonna)
  • Finals: Riley vs. Moreau
  • Summary: Anotehr wide open weight class that features a number of different wrestlers that could take the top step.  Riley looks like the man to beat on the top side and Moreau looks the best on the bottom side.  Keep an eye on Joseph Scirghio and Michael Sarron.

120 lbs.

  • Favorite: Dominic Gibson (Cardinal Gibson) - 2nd @ 120
  • Contenders:
    • Colby Singletary (Somerset Academy)
    • Nic Piraino (Key West) - 5th @ 106
    • Jackson Bishop (Jupiter Christian)
    • Tarik Montgomery (Coconut Creek)
    • Chris Jackson (Keys Gate)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Armegol vs. McGilvra
  • Darkhorse: Dylan McGilvra (Coral Shores)
  • Finals: Gibson vs. Singletary
  • Summary: Very good weight class ... in fact probably one of the best of the tournament.  Returning State Runner-up Dom Gibson is opposite of Singletary and Piraino.  The potential Singletary vs. Piraino semifinal will be one to watch.

126 lbs.

  • Favorite: Nicholas Benton (Somerset Academy) - SQ @ 106
  • Contenders:
    • Nicholas Desola (AHD) - SQ @ 120
    • Tarique Daley (Coconut Creek)
    • Dylan Burton (Calvary Christian)
    • Tyler Timothy (Coral Shores)
    • David Monrabel (Pace)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Coussens vs. Bryant
  • Darkhorse: Allen Bryant (Cardinal Gibbons)
  • Finals: Benton vs. Daley
  • Summary: The only two returning State Qualifiers, Benton and Desola, are on the same side of the bracket and could meet in the top semifinal.  I say could because quarterfinal bouts with Coussens/Bryant or Notario/Burton could be tough.  The bottom side is wide open and should probably fall to Coconut Creek's Tarique Daley.  Don't sleep on Monrabel, Oleson, Lopez, and Timothy.

132 lbs.

  • Favorite: Frankie Talshahar (AHD) - 2nd @ 113
  • Contenders:
    • Oscar Lacayo (Key West)
    • Kameron Maynard (Hallandale)
    • Kael Williams (Cardinal Gibbons)
    • Daniel Valledor (Somerset Academy)
    • Damien Krakower (Island Christian)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Estrada vs. Krakower
  • Darkhorse: Alejandro Estrada (Miami Jackson)
  • Finals: Talshahar vs. Lacayo
  • Summary: Returning 113 lb. State Runner-up Frankie Talshahar is the headliner of the 132 lb. bracket.  No other wrestlers qualified a season ago, but that doesn't mean they won't have an impact in 2016.  Lacayo, Maynard, Williams, and Valledor are the top contenders.  Valledor draws the short straw getting Talshahar in the quarters (assumign he gets past Bardinas).  Williams also has a fairly tough quarter with Estrada and Krakower.  Look for Lacayo and Maynard to battle it out on the bottom side.

138 lbs.

  • Favorite: Alex Perez (Pace) - 4th @ 138
  • Contenders:
    • Calab Ashe (Key West) - 3rd @ 126
    • Joey Lopez (Cardinal Gibbons) - SQ @ 138
    • Alyis Mursuil (Somerset Canyons)
    • Errol Pottinger (Ft Pierce Westwood)
    • Austin Henriquez (Mater Lakes)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Rendon vs. Henriquez
  • Darkhorse: Isaiah Martinez (Somerset Academy)
  • Finals: Ashe vs. Perez
  • Summary: One of the best weight classes of 1A Region 4 (right behind 120).  Perez and Ashe are the two returning State Placers, but don't look past returning qualifier Lopez and a trip of very good wrestlers in Mursuil, Pottinger, and Henriquez.  Ashe vs. Mursuil looks like the top semifinal, but the two quarterfinal matches will be tough.  Lopez vs. Pottinger in the 3rd quarter looks interesting and the winner will likely get Perez.

145 lbs.

  • Favorite: Dominick Venturi (AHP) - 6th @ 145
  • Contenders:
    • Vincent Blasucci (Somerset Academy) - SQ @ 132
    • Osvani Ley (Cardinal Gibbons)
    • Gianluigi Padilla (Keys Gate)
    • Austin Tuttle (Jupiter Christian)
    • ReShaund Williams (Miami Jackson)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Tucker vs. Williams
  • Darkhorse: Jordan Taylor (Coral Springs Charter)
  • Finals: Ley vs. Venturi
  • Summary: Venturi and Blasucci end up on the same side of the bracket ... meaning that should be a very good semifinal.  That leaves Osvani Ley, Gianluigi Padilla, and Austin Tuttle on the top side ... who will emerge from that side of the bracket?  Keep an eye on Tucker, Taylor and Williams and don't be surprised if a #2 or #3 ends up in the finals.

152 lbs.

  • Favorite: Juan Vernaza (Somerset Academy)
  • Contenders:
    • Devon Nelson (Cardinal Gibbons)
    • Cameron Taylor (Coral Springs Charter)
    • Jodeal Deralus (Key West)
    • Nick Cerbone (Cardinal Newman)
    • Nestor Nunez (Mater Lakes)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Nunez vs. Craven
  • Darkhorse: John Morin (St Andrew's)
  • Finals: Nelson vs. Vernaza
  • Summary: No returning qualifiers or placers means that 152 is fairly wide open.  On paper, Vernaza and Nelson look like the wrestlers to beat on their sides of the bracket, but given the relative uncertainty of the bracket ... at least 5 wrestlers have a legitimate shot at the top step.  Keep an eye on Cerbone, Taylor, and Deralus ... each could pose a problem for either Vernaza or Nelson.

160 lbs.

  • Favorite: Michael Lopouchanski (Cardinal Gibbons) - SQ @ 152
  • Contenders:
    • Ron Evans (Keys Gate) - SQ @ 160
    • D'mitrius Estevez (Somerset Academy)
    • Max Hume (Calvary Christian)
    • Austin Basile (Cardinal Newman)
    • Lazaro Rodriguez (Coral Shores)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Hettel vs. Hume
  • Darkhorse: Josh Hettel (Key West)
  • Finals: Estevez vs. Lopouchanski
  • Summary: The two best at 160 are on the bottom side ... so that means the top side is open for Basile, Estevez, Rodriguez, Hettel and Hume.  Be sure to watch the Hettel vs. Hume match in round 1 ... it should be a good one.  The wrestlers on the bottom side will challenge both Lopouchanski and Evans, but it seems unlikely that anyone will unseat either returning State Qualifier.  Their semifinal means that a #2 next week will have a very tough opening round match in Kissimmee.

170 lbs.

  • Favorite: Julian Georgescu (Cardinal Gibbons) - 6th @ 170
  • Contenders:
    • Brandon Petit (Miami Jackson) - SQ @ 195
    • Darrius Randolph (Ft Pierce Westwood)
    • Aryam Bonnin (Keys Gate)
    • Andrew Curry (Coconut Creek)
    • Vladimir Rochebrun (Pace)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Curry vs. Miranda
  • Darkhorse: Daniel Miranda (Somerset Academy)
  • Finals: Randolph vs. Georgescu
  • Summary: Once again the two best wrestlers on the bottom side of the weight class, in returning State Placer Julian Georgescu and State Qualifier Brandon Petit (a qualifier at 195).  Machado and Rodriguez are tough, but neither should knock off Georgescu or Petit.  The top side is open and don't be surprised if a #2 or #3 finds a way into the final.

182 lbs.

  • Favorite: Kevin Soltis (Coral Springs Charter) - SQ @ 170
  • Contenders:
    • Benson Dorvil (Coconut Creek) - SQ @ 182 2A
    • Tyler Nitti (Key West)
    • Tarivis Williams (Miami Jackson)
    • Jerrell Hobor (Chaminade Madonna)
    • David Hall (Ft Pierce Westwood)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Hobor vs. Nitti
  • Darkhorse: David Small (Cardinal Gibbons)
  • Finals: Soltis vs. Dorvil
  • Summary: Dorvil lost to Soltis at last weekend's District Tournament and that means David Hall and Jahlil Rankin will have to deal with him in the top quarter of the bracket.  Keep an eye on David Small ... he could give Hobor and Nitti headaches in the 2nd quarter.

195 lbs.

  • Favorite: Ryan Thomas (AHD) - 1st @ 195
  • Contenders:
    • Christopher Williams (Cardinal Gibbons)
    • Wanderley Mesa (Pinecrest Prep) - SQ @ 182
    • Jon Moltimer (Coral Springs Charter)
    • Wilson Remy (Booker T Washington)
    • Ty Torres (Key West)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Ineus vs. Aulet
  • Darkhorse: Robet Aulet (Mater Lakes)
  • Finals: Thomas vs. Williams
  • Summary: Thomas is the biggest favorite entering the 1A Region 4 tournament (followed by returning 285 lb. State Champion Dante Jiovenetta).  Thomas should easily handle the top side and will likely be waiting on the winner of Williams and Mesa in the finals.  That semifinal could be one of the best of the tournament.

220 lbs.

  • Favorite: Bradley Clement (AHP) - 5th @ 220
  • Contenders:
    • Isaac Exilus (Key West)
    • Cole Schwartzberg (Mater Lakes)
    • Cody Williams (Cardinal Gibbons)
    • Dylan Charlton (Westminster)
    • Nate Grant (Cardinal Newman)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Coccaro vs. Vazquez
  • Darkhorse: Andrew Vazquez (Somserset Academy)
  • Finals: Schwartzberg vs. Clement
  • Summary: Returning State Placer Bradley Clement is the favorite and easily take care of the bottom side of the bracket.  Exilus will look to give him a match in the semi's, but it would be a surprise to see Clement fall.  Keep an eye on Cole Schwartzberg, Dylan Charlton, and Nate Grant on the top side.

285 lbs.

  • Favorite: Dante Jiovenetta (Coral Shores) - 1st @ 285
  • Contenders:
    • Brandon Bodden (Miami Jackson)
    • John Moran (AHD)
    • George Ellis (AHP)
    • Adam Fox (Cardinal Gibbons)
    • Jaden Glover (Key West)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Gordon vs. Mosley
  • Darkhorse: Shandin Gordon (Coconut Creek)
  • Finals: Jiovenetta vs. Moran
  • Summary: Jiovenetta is easily the favorite in the bracket ... and will likely go unchallenged through the weekend.  Bodden drew the short straw and gets Jiovenetta on the same side (most likely in the semifinals).  The top side should be battle between Moran, Ellis, and Glover.  Cardinal Gibbons' Adam Fox gets Jiovenetta in the quarters and will need to win three on the backside to get a ticket to Kissimmee.
