We are excited to once again bring you "A Fan's Guide" to the FHSAA Regional Tournaments that are taking place this coming weekend across Florida.  We are pleased to provide the casual fan an insider's look into each bracket and what may (or may not) happen over the course of the weekend.  We make no predictions about who will win or qualify for next week's state tournament.  For each weight class we provide a few bulletpoints to watch and then a copy of the bracket (which you can see for yourself on trackwrestling.com).  Each weight class features:

  • Favorite: Our favorite to win the weight class based on this past season and past performance.
  • Contenders: A list of wrestlers that should challenge the favorite for the top step on the podium.
  • Best 1st round match: The match we believe will be the closest during the 1st round of action.
  • Darkhorse: A wrestler that did not finish 1st or 2nd in his/her area, but has all the tools to knock off everyone and take the top step.
  • Predicted Finals Match: Obviously who we believe will be in the finals.

Team Notes: School (# = # of qualifiers, # = # of District Champs)

Individual Notes:  SQ = 2015 State Qualifier; 1st = 2015 State Champ; 2nd = 2015 State Runner-up, etc.

District 13

  • Bayside (6, 3)
  • Eau Gallie (6, 0)
  • Heritage (8, 1)
  • Merritt Island (10, 3)
  • Palm Bay (12, 5)
  • Sebastian River (5, 1)
  • Viera (7, 1)

District 14

  • Dwyer (4, 1)
  • Jensen Beach (12, 11)
  • Okeechobee (10, 1)
  • Palm Beach Lakes (3, 1)
  • Port St Lucie (4, 0)
  • South Fork (11, 0)
  • Suncoast (5, 0)

District 15

  • Archbishop McCarthy (3, 0)
  • Blanche Ely (3, 0)
  • Boyd Anderson (0, 0)
  • Dillard (10, 1)
  • Northeast (4, 0)
  • Olympic Heights (14, 9)
  • South Broward (7, 3)
  • Stranahan (9, 0)
  • West Boca Raton (5, 1)

District 16

  • Belen Jesuit (3, 1)
  • Carol City (3, 2)
  • Central (3, 0)
  • Doral (4, 1)
  • Goleman (9, 3)
  • Miami Springs (5, 3)
  • Mourning (7, 1)
  • Norland (8, 1)
  • Northwestern (5, 1)
  • Sunset (8, 1)

  • Favorite: Jensen Beach
  • Contenders:
    • Olympic Heights
    • Palm Bay
    • South Broward
    • Goleman
  • Darkhorse: Merritt Island
  • Summary: Make no mistake ... this is a 2-team race for the title.  Palm Bay will be a factor, but they are likely chasing Jensen Beach and Olympic Heights.  It is just too difficult to make up for the number of District Champions that both Jensen Beach (11) and Olympic Heights (9) enter the tournament with ... and the "easier" matches they will likely get in the 1st round.  Palm Bay in turn has 5 District champions and will need to pull some upsets with their #2's and #3's if they are going to make a run at Jensen Beach and Olympic Heights.  South Broward, Goleman, and Merritt Island will have a say in who ends up on the top step, but those 3 schools will likely be battling it out for a top 5 finish (not a first place finish).

106 lbs.

  • Favorite: Anthony Valverde (South Broward)
  • Contenders:
    • Timothy Tran (Bayside)
    • Derrod Walker (Carol City)
    • Wyatt Kirkham (Jensen Beach)
    • Weston Blalock (Eau Gallie)
    • Anthony Limauro (Suncoast)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Joseph vs. Blalock
  • Darkhorse: Romel Joseph (Norland)
  • Finals: Tran vs. Valverde
  • Summary: Good weight class.  Tran vs. Walker on the top side is the most likely semifinal match-up ... Valverde is the man to beat on the bottom side.  Don't sleep on freshman Wyatt Kirkham in the 3rd quarter of the bracket.

113 lbs.

  • Favorite: Joey Tufo (Jensen Beach) - SQ @ 106
  • Contenders:
    • Andrew Valverde (South Broward)
    • Casey Jackson (Merritt Island)
    • Zachary Robertson (Sebastian River) - SQ @ 106
    • Adrian Gil (Mourning)
    • Blake Everett (Okeechobee)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Sinko vs. Davis
  • Darkhorse: Corey Lovett (Dillard)
  • Finals: Valverde vs. Tufo
  • Summary: Very good weight class that features two returning state qualifiers and at least 7 wrestlers that have the ability to punch their ticket to Kissimmee.  Jackson, Sinko, and Davis in the top quarter should produce 2 very good matches ... Valverde will likely be waiting on the winner in the top semifinal.  Tufo is the man to beat on the bottom side ... keep an eye on returning State Qualifier Zachary Robertson in the bottom quarter.

120 lbs.

  • Favorite: Justin Baxter (Bayside)
  • Contenders:
    • Gavin Johnson (Viera)
    • Kevin Estevez (West Boca Raton)
    • Jedediad Herring (Northwestern)
    • Chance Scott (Olympic Heights)
    • Anthony Perdomo (Goleman)
  • Best 1st Round Match: O'Neal vs. Perdomo
  • Darkhorse: Seth Adeclat (Heritage)
  • Finals: Baxter vs. Johnson
  • Summary: Wide open weight class with no returning State Qualifiers.  Baxter, Scott, Adams, O'Neal and Perdomo should battle it out up top.  The potential quarterfinal between Estevez and Johnson should be excellent.  Don't sleep on Seth Adeclat in the bottom quarter of the bracket.

126 lbs.

  • Favorite: Andrew Klopman (Jensen Beach) - 4th @ 120
  • Contenders:
    • Darius Darr (Viera)
    • Ussama Malik (Miami Springs)
    • Ethan Altabet (Olympic Heights)
    • Chris Patterson (Palm Bay)
    • Austin Scee (Okeechobee)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Deyoung vs. Perez
  • Darkhorse: Eddie Silva (Belen Jesuit)
  • Finals: Klopman vs. Darr
  • Summary: Returning State Placer Andrew Klopman is easily the man to beat at 126.  Darr vs. Altabet looks like the top semifinal ... but the winner will need to bring their "a" game to beat Klopman in the finals.  Don't sleep on Ussama Malik ... losing in the top quarters could be tough in punching a ticket to Kissimmee.

132 lbs.

  • Favorite: Konnor McHale (Jensen Beach) - SQ @ 120
  • Contenders:
    • Nick Peglow (Olympic Heights)
    • Donald Christman (Sebastian River)
    • Kevin Martinez (Doral)
    • Carlin Emmanuel (Stranahan)
    • Kallen Pineiro (Okeechobee)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Emmanuel vs. Urquijo
  • Darkhorse: Carlos Urquijo (Mourning)
  • Finals: Peglow vs. McHale
  • Summary: McHale and Christman might be the two best in the weight class, but we won't know because they should face each other in the top semifinal ... assuming Christman can get by either Emmanuel or Urquijo.  The top quarter of the bracket is the toughest.  Peglow, Martinez, Bucy, Pinerio, and Walker should battle it out on the bottom side.

138 lbs.

  • Favorite: David Sanchez (Miami Springs) - SQ @ 138
  • Contenders:
    • Drayton Billie (Okeechobee)
    • Shane Stewart (Palm Bay)
    • Andre L'Abadie (South Broward)
    • Paul Hirsch (Eau Gallie)
    • David Sastre (Miami Sunset)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Hirsch vs. Blackman
  • Darkhorse: Kahris Blackman (Miami Central)
  • Finals: Sanchez vs. Billie
  • Summary: Returning State Qualifier David Sanchez is the man to beat on the top side.  It should be Stewart vs. Sanchez in the top semifinal.  The bottom side is wide open and could find Billie, Blakcman, Hirsch, Sastre, Robertson, or L'Abadie in the finals.  Interested in close matches?  Watch the bottom side of this bracket.

145 lbs.

  • Favorite: Kyle Kirkham (Jensen Beach) - 4th @ 132
  • Contenders:
    • Bryce Poppell (Palm Bay) - SQ @ 145
    • Randall Sandoval (Miami Springs)
    • Aslet Jean (Norland)
    • Jarrett Mills (Okeechobee)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Blackman vs. Harris
  • Darkhorse: Kahron Blackman (Miami Central)
  • Finals: Poppell vs. Kirkham
  • Summary: Kirkham is easily the best at 145 and should easily handle the bottom side of the bracket.  Poppell, a returning State Qualifier is the man to beat up top, but his place in the finals is less certain.  Sandoval, Mills, and Suarez will look to knock him off and take the spot.  Kahron Blackman vs. Caleb Harris is easily the best 1st round match ... unfortunately the winner gets Kirkham ... quarter 3 is super tough.

152 lbs.

  • Favorite: Dylan Perrow (Palm Bay) - SQ @ 138
  • Contenders:
    • Danny Perez (Miami Sunset)
    • Dan Georges (Olympic Heights)
    • Liam Martin (Jensen Beach)
    • Darren Higgins (Merritt Island)
    • Dimitri Naimi (West Boca Raton)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Leon vs. Fahie
  • Darkhorse: Randy Leon (Stranahan)
  • Finals: Perrow vs. Perez
  • Summary: Perrow is the only returning State Qualifier and should handle a tough top side of the bracket.  The bottom side could come down to a Georges vs. Higgins and Hernandez vs. Perez quarterfinals ... we think Perez comes out of the bottom side, but Olympic Heights will be counting on it being Georges.

160 lbs.

  • Favorite: Sam Cannova (Olympic Heights) - SQ @ 152
  • Contenders:
    • Matthew Cates (Palm Bay)
    • Rene Capo (Merritt Island) - SQ @ 152
    • Cednet Jean (Norland)
    • Blake Wiswell (Jensen Beach)
    • Darrel Burgess (Northeast)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Jeffries vs. Burgess
  • Darkhorse: Isiah Jeffries (Sebastian River)
  • Finals: Cannova vs. Capo
  • Summary: Cannova and Cates are probably the two best in the weight class, but they are both on the top side and will likely meet in the semi's.  That leaves returning State Qualifier Rene Capo, Cednet Jean, and Blake Wiswell on the bottom side.  Capo vs. Jean is the best potential quarterfinal match (and the winner could easily be in the finals on Saturday).

170 lbs.

  • Favorite: Laurence Kosoy (Olympic Heights) - 3rd @ 160
  • Contenders:
    • Ariel Jimenez (Belen Jesuit)
    • Trent Boudreau (Stranahan)
    • Jack Sopotnick (Jensen Beach)
    • Lamar Williams (Okeechobee)
    • Owen Cavanaugh (Bayside)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Williams vs. Bordeau
  • Darkhorse: Alex Bordeau (West Boca Raton)
  • Finals: Jimenez vs. Kosoy
  • Summary: Returning State Placer Kosoy is the man to beat ... but the top side is wide open and should feature a number of good matches.  Williams vs. Bordeau and Hanna vs. Boudreau are the 2 best quarters at 170.

182 lbs.

  • Favorite: Cole Podaras (Jensen Beach) - SQ @ 170
  • Contenders:
    • Enrique Kelly (Goleman)
    • Arlean Dean (Palm Bay)
    • Troy Jaffy (Olympic Heights)
    • Basilio Garcia (Belen Jesuit)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Garcia vs. Johnson
  • Darkhorse: Joshua Henderson (Viera)
  • Finals: Kelly vs. Podaras
  • Summary: Podaras is the best at 182 and should handle the bottom side ... keep an eye on Basilio Garcia of Belen Jesuit.  The top side should come down to Dean vs. Kelly.

195 lbs.

  • Favorite: Caden Norris (Merritt Island)
  • Contenders:
    • Garrett Davidofsky (Olympic Heights)
    • Ivan Martinez (Goleman)
    • Andre Laurent (Palm Beach Lakes)
    • Frederick Dixson (Dillard)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Thomas vs. Noel
  • Darkhorse: James Thomas (Miami Northwestern)
  • Finals: Norris vs. Martinez
  • Summary: No returning State Qualifiers so the weight class is fairly wide open ... Norris and Davidofsky should battle it out on the top side and Martinez looks like the man to beat on the bottom side.  Keep an eye on Samuel Alexandre, James Thomas, and Emmanuel Noel on the top side and Frederick Dixson on the bottom side.

220 lbs.

  • Favorite: Alexi Castro (Olympic Heights) - SQ @ 195
  • Contenders:
    • Robert Valverde (South Broward)
    • Jerrod Clersaint (Carol City)
    • Nick Amicarelli (Merritt Island)
    • Kyven Higgins (Dwyer)
  • Best 1st Round Match: Torgusen vs. St Charles
  • Darkhorse: Marvens St Charles (Ely)
  • Finals: Castro vs. Valverde
  • Summary: Castro is a returnign 195 lb. State Qualifier and enters 33-0 ... he is the man to beat and should advance out of the top side of the bracket.  Keep an eye on Tyrone Brown of Port St Lucie and Nick Amicarelli of Merritt Island on the top side.  The bottom side should be very exciting.  Both quarters of the bottom side of the bracket could be up for grabs ... keep an eye on Jonathan Esquival of Miami Sunset - as a #4 he could be a huge surprise.

285 lbs.

  • Favorite: Nate Podaras (Jensen Beach) - SQ @ 285
  • Contenders:
    • Stefen Singer (Olympic Heights) - SQ @ 285 3A
    • Berthony Aulean (South Broward) - SQ @ 285
    • Joseph Lopez (Heritage)
    • Anthony Bello (Goleman)
    • Deandre Sims (Port St Lucie) - SQ @ 285
  • Best 1st Round Match: Carr vs. Addison
  • Darkhorse: De'Andre Carr (Stranahan) - SQ @ 285
  • Finals: Podaras vs. Singer
  • Summary: Great weight class ... perhaps the best of the tournament.  Lopez will likely need to handle returning state qualifier Berthony Aulean in the top quarter and winner should get Nate Podaras of Jensen Beach.  Stranahan's De'Andre Carr is also a returning state qualifier, but he will need a great tournament to get past both Addison and Podaras in the 2nd quarter of the bracket.  Singer is a hammer and should handle the 3rd quarter of the bracket ... be sure to watch Sims vs. Bello in the 4th quarter of the bracket ... the loser will likely need to beat Aulean or Lopez to get a ticket to state (the winner might need to beat either Lopez, Aulean, Carr or Addison to get to state).
