Georgia 3A Area 6 Season Preview

Team Race: 3A Area 6 features six teams that have a legitimate shot at capturing the Area title and wrestling in the Dual State Tournament in 2016.  Sonoraville, last year’s Dual State Runner-up and 4th in the Traditional Tournament, has to be considered the early favorite.  The Phoenix return nine, including State Runners-up Kenny Cooper and Kevin Hurtiz and three State Qualifiers.  Calhoun, who also qualified for the 2015 Dual State Tournament and finished 19th in the Traditional State Tournament, continues to push Sonoraville and the other top teams in the Area.  With twelve returnees, including State Placer Aaron Aguirre and Jacob Callahan and three State Qualifiers, the Yellow Jackets will be tough to beat in 2016.  Adairsville, Coahulla Creek, North Murray, and Ringgold are all ready to knock off either Sonoraville or Calhoun and grab one of the two spots in Macon.  Each team returns at least nine wrestlers with post-season experience and each is led by returning State Placers or State Qualifiers.  The 2015-2016 season should be a fun one to watch in 3A Area 6.

Contenders: 3A Area 6 features several individuals that have an excellent shot at being on the top step in 2016.  Seven medalists from 2015 return looking for that elusive individual title.  The group is led by State Runner-up Kevin Huritz (182) and Kenny Cooper (285) of Sonoraville.   Rumor has it that 120 lb. 4A State Runner-up Marcelino Lopez has transferred to Murray County.  If so, he has to be considered one of the favorites to capture an individual title in 2016 as well.  Adairsville’s Salvador Grimaldo and Ringgold’s Griffin Green and Jesse Wade each fell in the State Semifinals in 2015.  Each will be looking to get over that hump in 2016.  Calhoun’s Aaron Aguirre and Jacob Callahan finished fourth a season ago.  Grimaldo, Green, Wade, Aguirre, and Callahan all have a shot at grabbing the individual title in 2016, but each must find a way to breakthrough in the close matches.

Hunting the Podium: Area 6 features fifteen 2015 State Qualifiers who return in 2015-2016 and each will be looking to land a spot on the podium in 2016.  Each has a great shot of earning a medal, having been to Macon in 2015, but given their 2015 performance, it appears Sonoraville’s Jacob Bagwell, Ian Clark, and Lane Strickland, Calhoun’s Eduardo Aguilar, Coahulla Creek’s Levi Kinsey, and Ringgold’s Joey Collins are the most likely to be on the podium.  Keep an eye on CJ Delgadillo, Derrick Fowler, and Luis Velez of North Murray, Jacob Hood of Lakeview, Brody Mills of Gordon Central, Zion Hester and Daniel Lopez of Coahulla Creek, and Christian East and Zach Smith of Calhoun.  Each failed to win a match at the 2015 State Tournament, but will looking to change that in 2016.

Under the Radar: Keep an eye on the following wrestlers: Dallas Kubala of Adairsville, Abraham Pacheco of Calhoun, Alex Richmond of Coahulla Creek, Cole Templin of Lakeview, Diego Leon of Murray County, Carlos Carrillo and Josh Jones of North Murray, Brett Scott of Ringgold, and Gage Nicholson of Sonoraville.
