Georgia 5A Area 4 Season Preview
Team Race: Although Union Grove is not the ‘multi-national placers’ team of the past, the young talent at Union Grove is quite impressive. With one returning state champion, two additional returning state placers, and a state qualifier, Union Grove is the class of the area. However, Union Grove is not as dominant as other teams in other areas, and both Ola and Luella return great numbers and great wrestlers, and look to be set to have quite the battle. Both will be looking to get a shot at challenging Union Grove for the title. Keep an eye on both Dutchtown and Woodland Stockbridge.
Contenders: Union Grove’s trio of returning state placers including 132 lb. State Champion Justin Ruffin, 113 lb. State Placer Davion Fairley, and 160 lb. State Placer Luke Vinson are each looking for a chance to be on the top of the podium this season. The thing to notice about each of these athletes is that they all have at least one year left, and Ruffin, is only a sophomore. Ola’s Blake Meadows (4th at 170) is definitely a threat to the top step and will be looking to improve on his great season last year in his senior campaign.
Hunting the Podium: In an area that lacks overall depth, there is not a huge list of names that we can expect to see at the state championships. But don’t be surprised by the following State Qualifiers. Each will be looking to be on the podium in 2016. Dutchtown’s super sophomore Michael Parker, Forest Park’s Kenen Uribe-Ochoa, Luella’s Benjamin Preal and Aundarrius Weems, Mundy Mill’s Senior leader Jhante Charles, Union Grove’s Camden Johnson and Woodland, Stockbridge’s Jahi Deloatch and Brandon Rogers.
Under the Radar: Keep an eye on the following: Octavis Serrano of Charles Drew, Michael Dennis of Dutchtown, Steven Do of Forest Park, Dustin Berry and Cameron Hunter of Luella, Tyler Person of Morrow, Johnny Chastain of Mundy’s Mill, Shane Shirley, Jackson DiSario, and Jacob Bursby of Ola, Hunter East and Bryson Neace of Union Grove, and Ethan Rhine of Woodland, Stockbridge.
NOTE: Fred Jones (2nd, 113, Sr.) - meaning 2nd last season at the Traditional State Tournament at 113 lbs. Is a Senior in 2015-2016.
