Georgia 5A Area 5 Season Preview
Team Race: Area 5 has one of the more intriguing team races. A significant amount of talent was lost across the board due to graduation, but both Allatoona and South Paulding return the majority of their rosters, with strengths at different places in each lineup. Looking at it on paper, it is hard to determine who might come out on top. It will be exciting to see these two teams go at it this season, seeing as they are both more than familiar with each other! Keep an eye on Kell and Alexander. Both always find themselves in the mix and if either Allatoona or South Paulding should falter, one of these two teams appears to be ready to step in.
Contenders: Again, much of this area was lost due to graduation, so we should expect a great number of these athletes to step up and fill the void. One wrestler that we should expect to see back on top of the podium again in 2016 is 220 lb. State Champion Michael Farmer of South Paulding. He was outstanding en route to the title in 2015 and it would be a surprise if he weren’t on top again in 2016. Allatoona’s Jack Woods (3rd at 145) and South Paulding’s Noah Isley (3rd at 126) have a real shot at being on top of the podium. South Paulding’s Jake Mctyre (6th at 152), Kell’s Sam Ashway (6th at 170), and Allatoona’s Will Formato (5th at 120) and Chris Valentine (170) have an outside shot at claiming the top step.
Hunting the Podium: Nine Area 5 wrestlers return after making a trip to Macon a season ago. Alexander’s London Dubroc and Austin Starnes, Allatoona’s Cody Anderson and Sonngy Santana, and South Paulding’s Daniel Byers, Randy Carter, and William Moon each won matches at the 2015 State Tournament. Allatoona’s Harrison Kemp made an appearance a season ago, but failed to win a match. Expect that to change in 2016.
Under the Radar: Logan Dasaro and Trevor Rose of Alexander, Kyle Geiss and Malcolm Spencer of Allatoona, Darnell McHardy of East Paulding, Logan Driver of Hiram, Ismail Dabdoub and Nathan Woolf of Kell, DeShaun Miller-Kinard of New Manchester, Marshall Fleming of Paulding County, Zach Kinard of South Paulding, Chance Connor of Sprayberry, and Travahn Wheeler of Villa Rica.
NOTE: Fred Jones (2nd, 113, Sr.) - meaning 2nd last season at the Traditional State Tournament at 113 lbs. Is a Senior in 2015-2016.
