Georgia 5A Area 6 Season Preview

Team Race: Dunwoody is easily the team to beat in 5A Area 6. The Wildcats return the most talent with the best overall wrestler in the region and two additional state qualifiers. Look for Dunwoody to build on that excellence and improve from a year ago. Given the level of graduation that Southwest DeKalb had a season ago, there doesn’t seem to be many real contenders for the team title.  That said; don’t be surprised if there is a real battle for the #2 spot between Druid Hills and Southwest DeKalbSW DeKalb was decimated by graduation and will need to lean on Masud As-Siddiq and Muadh As-Siddiq to lead the way.  Druid Hills features State Qualifiers Hakeem Enis and Jordan Page and returns six other wrestlers with post-season experience.

Contenders: Area 6 returns only a single state placer in Dunwoody’s Chris Solo. Solo finished 5th in the Sectional, but 4th in the State Tournament in 2015.  Expect him to push for the top step on the podium in 2016.  Beyond Solo, it would be a surprise if any other Area 6 wrestler claimed an individual title in 2016, but several could find the podium.

Hunting the Podium: Area 6 has but a few state qualifiers looking for a spot on the podium this year, but in 5A, that is quite the accomplishment, and with a few seniors, and some underclassmen, we can expect a few big performances from the following wrestlers: Druid Hills’s Hakeem Enis and Jordan Page each won matches at last year’s State Tournament and appear ready to claim a medal in 2016.  Dunwoody’s Max Tuch and Ben Williams and Southwest DeKalb’s Treneilus Craddock went 1-2 and will need to wrestle better in 2016 if they are going to grab a medal.  Miller Grove’s Gary Freeman and Southwest Dekalb’s Rodre Fears each finished the 2015 State Tournament 0-2.  They will need to wrestle significantly better if they want to be on the podium Saturday evening.  Keep in mind that both Masud As-Siddiq and Muadh As-Siddiq of Southwest DeKalb both qualified for the 2015 State Tournament, but neither wrestled.  Both will be looking for a spot on the podium in 2016.

Under the Radar:  Keep an eye on: Banneker’s Devante Davis and Juwone Robinson, Clarkston’s Tyjuan Bush, Druid Hills’ Deshaun Baker and Demarco Moseley, Dunwoody’s Nesteor Foley and Darwin Osorio, and Southwest DeKalb’s Kaivion Brown.

Team Capsules:

NOTE: Fred Jones (2nd, 113, Sr.) - meaning 2nd last season at the Traditional State Tournament at 113 lbs.  Is a Senior in 2015-2016.
