Georgia 6A Area 3 Season Preview
Team Race: 6A Area 3 should come down to a battle between East Coweta and Newnan. Both teams were the representatives from Area 3 at the Dual State Tournament a season ago and both return more than one wrestler that has been on the mats in Macon, for the Traditional State Tournament. With fourteen returnees that include a returning State Placer and two State Qualifiers, East Coweta appears, on paper, to be the favorite. Newnan returns nine that include two State Qualifiers, but will need some new faces to step up if they are going to be the best in Area 3. Keep an eye on Campbell (8 returnees), Douglas County (9 returnees), and South Cobb (9 returnees). Each has the numbers to compete; they just need the production to be able to knock off East Coweta or Newnan.
Contenders: Area 3 really features just one wrestler with a legitimate shot at claiming the top step on the final weekend of the season. East Coweta’s Dustin Nelson took 6th at 113 in the 2015 State Tournament. Nelson is incredibly tough, but will need to wrestle extremely well if he is going to take home the title. The level of competition at 113, 120, 126 is very high and it will take an incredible effort to claim the title.
Hunting the Podium: Six 2015 State Qualifiers return in 2015-2016 and each will be looking to land a spot on the podium in 2016. Newnan’s Jason Moore and Pebblebrook’s Keith Brown each won matches at the 2015 State Tournament and represent Area 3’s best shot at having someone on the podium. East Coweta’s Garrett Klinger and Jalen Smith, Newnan’s Brady Smith, and Westlake’s Stephen Jackson each finished the 2015 State Tournament 0-2. Each will need to wrestle better if they are going to medal in 2016.
Under the Radar: Keep an eye on the following wrestlers: King Simms of Campbell, Steven McGuire of Douglas County, Aryaan Adams and Evan Fields of East Coweta, Chris Grier of Newnan, and Kardan Maberry, Zaetwan Martin, and Darius Caldwell of South Cobb.
NOTE: Fred Jones (2nd, 113, Sr.) - meaning 2nd last season at the Traditional State Tournament at 113 lbs. Is a Senior in 2015-2016.
