Tennessee Girls Who’s Number 1 Recap

On Saturday September 23rd Tennessee USA Wrestling held their annual Girls Who’s Number 1 event at Brentwood Academy in Brentwood, Tennessee. The top two ranked girls at weights from 100 pounds to 235 pounds would compete in a single match to determine the true number 1 ranked lady in the state. Let’s look at how it all shook out Saturday night.

 

100 pounds

Ryleigh Sturgill (Baylor) 1-0, Fr. over Grace Von Loh (Riverdale) 0-1, Jr. (Fall 5:07)

Sturgill from Baylor school and a former AAU Tennessee Girls state champion would pin Grace Von Loh from Riverdale to gain a number 1 ranking at 100 pounds in the state of Tennessee.

107 Pounds

Payton Agnell (Tullahoma) 1-0, Sr. over Alyssa Archer (Franklin County ) 0-1, Sr. (Fall 3:55)

Payton Agnell from Tullahoma would follow Sturgill at 107 pounds with a fall over Alyssa Archer from Franklin County to obtain a number 1 ranking at 107 pounds.

114 pounds

Senna Grassman (Cleveland) 1-0, So. over Melanie Val (St. Andrew`s Sewanee) 0-1, Sr. (TF-1.5 6:00 (17-2))

Tennessee Girls state placer and Southeast Regional champion Senna Grassman from powerhouse Cleveland high school would be dominant as well at 114 pounds. Picking up the tech fall victory over Melanie Val from St. Andrew’s Sewanee and obtaining a number 1 ranking in the process.

120 pounds

Mariana Bowen (West Creek) 1-0, So. over Caroline Hilton (Minion Wrestling Club) 0-1, 8th. (Fall 5:11)

Mariana Bowen from West Creek who won the Tennessee division 1 state championship at 120 pounds last winter would take on 8th grade phenom Caroline Hilton from Minion Training Center in Chattanooga. In the end, Bowen would pick up the fall and a number 1 ranking, but Hilton will be a name you will hear a lot in the coming years.

122 pounds

Lexi Dean (West Creek) 1-0, Fr. over Ava Johnson (Clarksville) 0-1, Fr. (Dec 7-6)

Lexi Dean, yet another AAU Girls state champion and Southeast Regional Champion took on Ava Johnson who was AAU state runner-up to Dean this past winter. In what may have been the best match of the night, Dean would edge out Johnson once again via a 7-6 decision to obtain a number 1 ranking at 122 pounds.

126 pounds

Jes`onia Barefield (West Creek) 1-0, Jr. over Shai Ring (Blackman) 0-1, Jr. (Fall 1:51)

Jes`onia Barefield, the third straight wrestler from West Creek to obtain a number 1 ranking, would pin Shai Ring from Blackman to snag a number 1 ranking at 126 pounds. Keep an eye on the West Creek girls program this winter. They look to be dominant.

132 pounds

Gabbie Newton (Jefferson Co) 1-0, So. over Halai Cox (McGavock) 0-1, Jr. (Fall 1:45)

Gabbie Newton from Jefferson County would grab the number 1 ranking at 132 pounds when she pinned Halai Cox from McGavock.

138 pounds

Trinity Roberts (Heritage) 1-0, So. over Stella Wilson (St. Andrew`s Sewanee) 0-1, Jr. (Dec 8-1)

Tennessee Girls division 1 state placer last winter Trinity Roberts from Heritage would defeat Stella Wilson from St. Andrew’s Sewanee via a 8-1 decision to grab a number 1 ranking at 138 pounds.

145 pounds

Gianna Nikolao (Kirkwood) 1-0, Sr. over Brooklyn Whiteside (Clarksville) 0-1, Sr. (Fall 5:32)

Gianna Nikolao from Kirkwood would pin last winter’s Tennessee Girls division 1 state placer Brooklyn Whiteside from Clarksville to obtain the number 1 ranking at 145 pounds. 

152 pounds

Krickett Jones (Karns) 1-0, Sr. over Julia Jirka (Mt. Juliet) 0-1, Jr. (Fall 3:27)

Krickett Jones from Karns would pick up the number 1 ranking at 152 pounds when she pinned Julia Jirka from Mount Juliet.

165 pounds

Irelyn Laurin (Kirkwood) 1-0, So. over Aliya Whaley (Knox. Catholic) 0-1, Jr. (Fall 3:28)

Another division 1 girls state placer from a year ago Irelyn Laurin from Kirkwood would solidify her number 1 ranking at 165 pounds when she pinned division 1 state runner-up Aliya Whaley from Knoxville Catholic.

 

A side note at 165 pounds, where is world champion Piper Fowler?

235 pounds

Sha`Niayha Wysinger (Clarksville) 1-0, Sr. over Emma Young (Alcoa) 0-1, Sr. (Fall 0:44)

Division 1 state champion Sha`Niayha Wysinger from Clarksville would solidify her number 1 ranking when she would grab a first period pin over division 1 state placer Emma Young from Alcoa.
