Coach Moore and Harris County continue to reload but 2023-24 could be a “tough” year in comparison to the past. Harris County is a perennial top 5 team in 5A and they will once again be in the hunt for a spot in the top 5, but they will need to do it without a returning State Placer. State Runners-up Nick Nguyen, Davis Culpepper, and Davin Lundquist have all graduated and that leaves three State Qualifiers (Vanwettering, Byrd, and Sappington to pick up the load). This is a team that does not return a state placer (for the first time in many seasons) and is fairly young on paper … with a host of Juniors leading the way. Seniors Aidan Westbrook and Quinton Lewis are back and Lewis qualified for the Sectional Tournament a year ago, but the strength of this team is with the Junior class. Vanwettering and Byrd both were state qualifiers and both nearly made the podium in 2023. Expect both of them to be on the podium in 2024. Sophomore heavyweight Wes Sappington is getting better and better and after qualifying for the state tournament as a freshman the expectations are high. Keep an eye on Ethan Bresnahan, Tyler McGuire, Davis Brooks, and Denvere Degonia - each wrestled in the post-season in 2023 and each will look to punch his ticket in 2024. Harris County will also look to a quartet of freshmen to make an impact. Watch for Easton Boren (175/190), Matt Love (113), Jaxon Barnett (120), and Brodie Martin (175) to make some noise as well as Junior Kaden Schacht. - SEWrestle
