2A Storylines

Is Mount Pleasant the favorite?

The defending champions should be considered the favorite even though they lost Dalton Miller and Levi Kluttz. Mount Pleasant returns Chase Crayton, David McEachern and Kyler Pickard. Who are all big point scorers. Also, with the exit of several top teams to 3A it looks like Mount Pleasant is in the driver’s seat.

Chase Crayton quietly seeks title number 3

Is Crayton the most underrated kid in the state right now? He is a 2x defending state champion, seeking his 3rd title and I don’t feel like he is talked about like a potential 3x champ is talked about. He recently completed at Super 32 after playing football the night before. That is warrior stuff. He is a heavy favorite to capture is 3rd title.

What team will emerge as the challenger to the champs?

West Lincoln and Newton Conover are two pillars of 2A that have a championship pedigree. I believe they are the two teams that could make strides to challenge for a title this year. Another team that could challenge is Reidsville. Their momentum has been building for years and they had a terrific performance at the 2021 state tournament.

Does RJ James become that dude of 2A?

I don’t think it is a secret that I am a big RJ James fan. The way he wrestles on his feet and his top work are what wrestling should look like aesthetically. The way he gets to legs is exactly what I am looking for on the big boards. After a runner-up finish as a freshman does he turn it up this year to become a star in the 2A classification? If he has worked on his bottom work then I think he will be.

Jeremiah Price is the top uncommitted wrestler in North Carolina

So far Jeremiah Price is two for two for state titles and remains on track to become a 4x state champion. He had a great run at Super 32, placed at GFC and won a NHSCA title. All these accolades plus his wrestling style is what makes him so coveted as a recruit. Trust me, colleges coaches are very interested. If you are the gambling type bet the house on Jeremiah winning a 3rd title this year.
